Mario Van Peebles' Western isn't as bad as it could be - - its cast list, after all, boasts both Billy Zane and Stephen Baldwin - - but it still hasn't got a single original idea bouncing around in its not-so-pretty little skull.

Black cowboys in the old West? Done better in Unforgiven. A mission to save a small township? Straight out of The Magnificent Seven. The treacherous, vengeful commander (Zane) hunting down Peebles' deserting army troop? Well, it's nicking huge dollops of The Outlaw Josey Wales, not to mention a few lumps of The A-Team for good measure.

With layers of reheated Sergio Leone spread on top, Posse ends up a competent but overfamiliar Frankenstein that's far, far less than the sum of its stolen parts. Talk about flogging a dead horse...
