Postcards From The Edge

3

Novelist and ex-Leia Carrie Fisher's witty, autobiographical account of her drug problems, post-Star Wars career and relationship with Hollywood mom Debbie Reynolds. Meryl Streep plays the actress heading for rehab while Shirley MacLaine rips it up as her mom, an alcoholic fading star. Director Mike Nichols makes the most of a sharp script, Streep and MacLaine are superb and there are heavyweight cameos from Gene Hackman, Richard Dreyfus, Rob Reiner and Dennis Quaid.

DVD Extras:

Commentary by Carrie Fisher, filmographies. Quality sound and picture, but the highlight is Fisher's hilarious, shambling and gossip-filled commentary. Delightfully indiscreet and displaying some telling memory lapses, Fisher still manages to astutely praise the director and cast in this top-value talk-show style confessional. One of the funniest commentaries around.
