Pot Luck

When Parisian economics student Xavier (Romain Duris) heads to Barcelona for a year of study, his life looks mapped out, from his relationship with girlfriend Martine (Amélie's Audrey Tautou) to a future career as a Eurocrat. He then moves into a crowded, messy flat with other students from around Europe and, gradually, the uptight Xavier begins to loosen up amid the sun and squalor.

Both a paean to pan-European understanding and a comic look at the voyage into adulthood, writer/director Cédric Klapisch's ensemble piece is both witty and tender. Too often, though, he tacitly indulges the selfish behaviour of his protagonists - - not least Xavier himself, who has an affair with married Anne-Sophie (Judith Godrèche) and shouts at his nice hippy mum.
