Potiche

A trophy wife finds herself in control of her family’s umbrella factory

Catherine Deneuve is in charming, disarming form in François Ozon’s lightweight latest as trophy wife Suzanne, who finds herself in control of her family’s umbrella factory after her controlling hubby is turfed out by rebellious employees. It’s classic screwball, but there are enough moments of comic delight – not least Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu’s much-trailed disco dance – to counter Potiche’s more flimsy, familiar elements. Ozon wisely makes no attempt to conceal the staginess of the script, allowing his stars to savour each sly beat of their drawingroom dialogue.
