Before Russell Crowe donned a toga...

Long before Russell Crowe donned toga and tights for Ridley Scott, he rocked an apron for Jocelyn Moorhouse’s nuanced Aussie dramedy of truth and lies.

Crowe’s Andy befriends Martin (Hugo Weaving), a blind photographer involved in prickly power games with his smitten, troubled housekeeper Celia (Genevieve Picot).

Plotting is stolid, but Moorhouse balances black comedy, character drama and darker shades like she does our sympathies. The cast measure up nicely, not least Crowe, whose matey charm dishes unaffected proof of his early promise.
