Receiving a belated UK release, Johnny To’s 2003 outing – shot before Election and Exiled – is another coolly ironic delve into the Hong Kong underworld. The title stands for Police Tactical Unit, the members of which are the nominal heroes of a thriller where one mislaid gun sets off a chain of bloody consequences. To’s darkly comic sensibility is typified by the conscientious officer who carefully removes his boot before kicking a suspect half to death. As he muses in an accompanying interview, “Getting stabbed doesn’t mean you can’t drive a taxi…”
