Purple Rain: 20th Anniversary Special Edition

4

In the most embarrassing decade in pop, it seemed Prince could do no wrong, due in part to the enormous success of 1984's Purple Rain. Yes, he minces amateurishly from one ludicrous set-piece to another. But it's a marvellous spectacle for fans of a certain age and, as `The Kid' wins a local battle of the bands and secures the affection of Latino lovely Apollonia Kotero, you can't help but give the little guy a cheer.

DVD Extras:

The first disc's commentary from director Albert Magnoli was unavailable at press time, but the second disc's materials make this a worthwhile purchase on their own. They include a Making Of featuring lots of on-set anecdotes from Magnoli, a profile of the First Avenue club in Prince's hometown of Minneapolis, an overblown look at the impact of the movie and some mullet-tastic MTV footage of the film's launch.
