'"I'm bored to death with Montparnasse!"' says Maggie Smith's sex-starved ex-pat in this 1981 offering from Merchant Ivory. You'll end up agreeing with her. For while she and Alan Bates excel as the depraved marrieds who take Isabelle Adjani under their wing in '20s Paris, this melodrama - - based on a novella by Jean Rhys and full of unsubtitled French dialogue - - is cinema at its most sluggish. Steer clear.
