Based on a real-life story, Rabbit Proof Fence follows three “half-caste” girls (Everlyn Sampi, Tianna Sansbury, Laura Monaghan) who fall foul of the Oz government’s segregation policy. Torn from their home and moved to a correctional camp, the first stop to assimilation, they escape and begin the 1,500-mile trek home by foot.
Taking time out from his usual Hollywood thrillers, Aussie director Phillip Noyce here makes art from the heart, turning in a lump-in-throat message movie. Noyce then followed it with The Quiet American, effectively dismantling his hack-for-hire status to become a filmmaker of considerable repute.
