Raid On Entebbe

3

True story of a commando rescue mission to free hostages in a terrorist hijacking.

Irvin Kershner’s account  of the 1976 Israeli hostage siege at Uganda’s airport was made for American TV but upgraded to cinemas here.

Filmed just months after the actual events, its solid construction belies the brisk production, the future Empire Strikes Back director marshalling a complex narrative and an impressive cast (Charles Bronson, Peter Finch, James Woods and Yaphet Kotto’s Idi Amin) with no-frills assurance.

What it lacks in panache it makes up for in purpose: it’s a model for how to make this kind of thing, thanks to a crystal-clear screenplay and robust camerawork from Jaws’ Bill Butler.
