After O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Big Lebowski, we're used to the Coens doing out-and-out comedy, but fans of their debut, Blood Simple, must have been shocked when this arrived as their second movie. Fourteen years later, it's still a yuk-a-minute screwball feelgooder. Nic Cage (see, he was good, once) and Holly Hunter make a wonderfully dysfunctional screen couple, and look out for Frances McDormand's hilarious cameo as a hellish mom.
DVD Extras:
Trailer. The Coens will probably never do a commentary, and if they did, it'd probably involve lengthy silences punctuated only by the occasional, intentionally oblique comment or in-joke. But even considering that, this is still a disappointing disc - - why not get Coen regulars John Goodman or Holly Hunter to blah for a bit, for example? Even with improved picture and sound, it's still not really worth the tenner more than it costs on vid.
