Clunky made-for-American-TV biopic of Russia's Greatest Love Machine. Filmed in 1996 after the discovery of the bones of the murdered Romanoff family, it charts the final years of Imperial Russia as hereditary sickness, dynastic arrogance and the ridiculous influence wielded by a loopy priest paved the way to revolution. Authentic settings and solid Brit thesping from the likes of Ian McKellan, David Warner and Greta Scacchi never completely hide the pounding heavyhandedness of the script. And as for Alan Rickman's Rasputin... Well, let's just say it makes his Sheriff of Nottingham look like a masterpiece of restrained dignity.
