A biopic about a disabled icon with a drug abuse problem? Ray was designed for Oscar. Which isn't to diminish Jamie Foxx's efforts in morphing into `The Genius' Ray Charles, combining uncanny mimicry with real soul. But Taylor Hackford doesn't quite transform the raw material - - Charles' battles with prejudice, addiction and his wayward groin - into a compelling picture. Dream sequences and flashbacks clarify the influences on the icon, but with drawn-out pacing and pat psychology Ray doesn't really sing.
