The movie that upped the '80s gore ante at a time when blood was already flowing freely, Re-Animator is still a messy treat. Barking medical student Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) invents a serum that brings the dead back to life... only the re-animated have a nasty habit of ripping the living to mushy bits. Intended as a sombre shocker, the film-makers ingeniously changed track when they realised it just wasn't scary. The result is a gross-out slapsticker to rival The Evil Dead.
