Behind the canvass...

Gilles Bourdos’ languid highlights a little-known figure in the lives of France’s greatest father-son combo – impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Michel Bouquet) and his offspring Jean (Vincent Rottiers).

Set in 1915, the film focuses on Andrée Heuschling (Christa Theret), the model hired by Renior Snr who later became Jean’s lover, inspiring him towards his career in cinema.

Beautifully shot, with a use of light the Renoirs would surely appreciate, it’s slow and frustrating in parts, but makes for a lovely portrait of the artists.
