Terminally ill girl meets funeral-loving boy

Love means never having to say sorry for hanging out at burials in Gus Van Sant’s well-acted but uneven indie romance, which casts Henry Hopper – a dead ringer for late dad Dennis – as a morbid teen whose gate-crashing of random funerals draws him to fellow oddball Mia Wasikowska.

As accustomed as he is to looking death in the face – thanks in part to a ghostly Japanese kamikaze pilot whom only he can see – he’s ill-equipped to deal with Wasikowska’s own illness in a film that steers an unsteady course between heart-tugging weepie and twee whimsy.
