Ang Lee delivers the directing goods in this epic American Civil War drama - but then we knew he could do it. Tobey Maguire does a superb job as the young man torn between fighting and family - - but then we knew he could. And, er, Jonathan Rhys Myers is terrible - - but then you know the rest... It's ballad caterwauler Jewel who surprises, though, turning in a subtle, non-showy performance.
