Ringers: Lord Of The Fans offers a broad historical sweep through Middle-earth; it layers a droll narration by Hobbit actor Dominic Monaghan on to some Monty Python-style cut-out animation to tell the tale of Tolkien fandom from the ’50s through to the premiere of The Return Of The King.
All the usual suspects – from the film’s cast to fanboys dressed as Ents – pop in for talking-heads moments, with only a few surprises peppering the “Oh my God! Middle-earth, like, sooooo changed my life!” drooling. Who knew that David Carradine was a big fan back in hippy-time? Or that Lemmy from Motörhead used to hang out at a ’60s club called Gandalf’s Garden, where they handed you a free tab of acid as you crossed its threshold?
