Think The Italian Job without the Minis, Michael Caine or the cockney banter and you have this serious crime yarn from ’67, transparently based on the Great Train Robbery of four years earlier. Detailing the meticulous planning and execution of this daring heist leaves director Peter Yates little room for indulgences. Pity, then, he wastes what little downtime he has on a romance between Stanley Baker’s thief and Joanna Pettet, fresh from playing Mata Bond in the original Casino Royale. The first-act car chase is a pulse-pounding highlight which landed Yates the Bullitt gig. No extras.
