Cédric Kahn's taut and truthful take on the real-life case of an '80s serial killer isn't your usual wacko-on-the-loose romp. Instead of mythologising the bug-eyed Succo (a vigorously edgy Stefano Cassetti), this probing policier explores the slippery sense of self that seemed to allow him to elude capture for two years. Less a case of murder-by-numbers than an acute, gripping investigation into pathological impulsiveness.
DVD Extras:
A Q&A-style commentary from Kahn is dryly matter-of-fact but at least pads out the details of the case. Given that French police picketed the film at Cannes for glamourising Succo, he's keen to stress the authenticity of his film.
