Rock Star

3

Based on Judas Priest warbler Rob Halford, who was plucked from obscurity to sing for his idols, Rock Star is to heavy metal what Crossroads is to bubblegum pop: straight-up wish fulfilment. Put plainly, there's sod-all depth to Stephen Herek's rock opus. Yet it remains enjoyable nonetheless, as Mark Wahlberg reprises his ingénue role from Boogie Nights to play the lucky lad chosen to front his favourite band.

DVD Extras:

Director's commentary, Back Stage Pass featurette, music video, trailer. The support acts on this disc are disappointing: even the modest tag `featurette' is too grand a billing for this pathetic offering. But Herek's commentary makes amends: he brightly comments on everything from the battalion of poodle-permed real-life rockers in the film, to cajoling Marky Mark into wearing mascara.
