Lili Fini Zanuck (Richard's missus) had a fair crack at this needle-and-the-damage-done drama, a movie that makes for interesting revisiting following this year's fellow Jason Patric-starrer, Narc.
Set in Texas, it stars Jennifer Jason Leigh as a rookie undercover drugbuster taken under the wing of old-hand-at-the-game Patric. When he says they have to do drugs to protect their cover, she buys in - and the film shapes up into a bitter, bleak study in self-delusion, drug-fuelled co-dependency and innocence corrupted.
It's good stuff, to a point: Patric and Leigh shine, and Gregg Allman makes a nasty pusher. But eventually, any subtleties are lost as the moral message is battered home.
