Tough but tender, angry yet artful, Australian director Warwick Thornton’s supple debut feature is a brash beauty. Romeo And Juliet is the source but the setting is distinct, Thornton’s teens being deprived Aboriginal kids in central Australia. Don’t expect Baz luhrmann-ish razzmatazz: abrasive sound design, spare landscapes and subtly expressive turns comprise Thornton’s uniquely stark strain of ruggedly poetic neo-realism. The four terrific shorts on this jam-packed disc provide further evidence of the director’s talent.
