Here’s a treasure. A grubby gush of ultraviolence that, judging by the terrific Making Of doc, appears to have been made by a 12-year-old. It really does look way beyond director James Wan’s bedtime for him to be responsible for the slowly uncurling tale of a Se7en-style sicko driven by a mangled morality. But, despite the OD of squalid, amphetamine-jitter visuals and NIN-lite industrial clamour, he nails a nasty, lingering vibe of kill horribly or be killed horribly.
