Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus

Originally commissioned for the BBC's Arena documentary series, Searching For The Wrong- Eyed Jesus is a lyrical and enjoyably idiosyncratic portrait of the American Deep South from British filmmaker Andrew Douglas.

Acting as guide and narrator is the Florida-born alt-country singer Jim White who, in his beat-up 1970 Chevy, tours the byroads of the region, stopping off to talk to people and offer them a succinct summary of their life options: "Choose Jesus or choose hell." Yet, in examining the conflict between the sacred and the profane, this leisurely film celebrates the rich tradition of Southern storytelling and artistic creativity - with local musicians such as Johnny Dowd, The Handsome Family and Lee Sexton performing their plaintive songs in everyday locations.
