Secret Beyond The Door

An innocent young lady marries a suave architect and then discovers his darker side

Borrowing a plot from the Bluebeard legend, and chucking in a load of  sub-Freudian hokum, Fritz Lang nonetheless makes a class act of this Gothic psycho-thriller. Joan Bennett’s the innocent who marries suave architect Michael Redgrave, only to realise that his obsession with rooms in which murders have occurred masks something even weirder. Bennett convinces as a woman turned on by danger while noirish lensing enhances the moody, dream-like atmosphere. Shame the ending’s such a letdown.
