Overegged Stephen King adaptation about a struggling horror novelist (a relentlessly hammy Johnny Depp) who's fending off accusations of plagiarism from John Turturro's mental Hicksville hack: ""You stole ma story"". Cue mucho boho nonsense as Depp's dishevelled literary lag unravels into jaw-clicking psychosis and the claustrophobic wood-cabin set-up descends into the depths of hilariously camp trashiness.
DVD Extras:
Nuts'n'bolts featurettes and bland deleted scenes are mildly diverting, but the real eyecatcher here is the unlikely inclusion of several "animatics": cartoon-style CG-storyboards used to pre-visualise the film. Elsewhere, Depp is notable for his absence, though writer/director David Koepp livens up his chat-track with a clip of voiceover the star recorded to placate studio suits worried he should show more emotion over the death of his pet pooch. ""Oh, poor Chico! You poor dog!""
