"Tom and Max took us to a 'new silly' and really gave us a second wind," remarks Jerry Seinfeld on the exemplary extras accompanying this eight-disc set. Certainly, the arrival of new writers Tom Gammill and Max Pross saw the sitcom forego any semblance of realism and push for more elaborately layered and surreal scenarios than ever before. The result is 46 episodes of genius lunacy yet to be surpassed on TV.
Highlights include Elaine dumping a boyfriend for not using an exclamation mark, George employing a lipreader as a 'secret weapon' at a party and Kramer inventing the male bra ("the bro"). There's also a masseuse who refuses to give boyfriends massages, a toilet-paper-hogging sex-line operator and the small matter of getting caught making out during Schindler's List...
BEST BIT Elaine tells Jerry she faked her orgasms with him. Every. Single. One.
DVD Extras:
All the usual extras are in place: talking heads, deleted scenes, documentaries, commentaries, promos and trivia notes. Plus, as the excellent Jerry + Larry = George doc reminds, Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm may be garnering more attention these days but Seinfeld did self-centred exasperation meets cartoon coincidence first - and best. Still the greatest sitcom of all time.
