Crime movies don't come much nastier than David Fincher's slick, sick tale of a serial killer punishing perpetrators of the seven deadly sins. The mystery is spun at a cracking pace, the performances are spot-on and Fincher's digitally mastered new print makes the anonymous city look even more oppressive.
DVD Extras:
Four cast and crew audio commentaries, seven deleted scenes, alternate ending with animated storyboard exploration, opening title sequence exploration with multiple angles, theatrical trailer, multiple animated galleries featuring production designs and photos, feature on John Doe's notebooks and filmogs. After the inadequate original DVD release (no extras whatsoever), justice has finally been served with a two-disc set including tons of goodies and, thankfully, no annoying promo-style featurettes. The alternate ending is abrupt (it simply slashes the final two minutes of the cinema version) and the deleted scenes add little impact (except for a superb original opening with more of Freeman), but the best extras are those commentaries. For sheer entertainment value, you can't beat Pitt, Freeman and Fincher's liberally profane gab-over which, among other things, reveals how effortlessly Fincher and Pitt connect.
