It may sound like a fast-flowing piece of cheesy Europorn, but anyone expecting Sex Traffic to be driven by nubile nymphos named Nadia and moustachioed plumbers called Roger is clearly going to be disappointed. Channel 4’s BAFTA-winning miniseries instead takes viewers into a dangerous, seedy, horrific sex-for-sale underworld.
A pre-Life On Mars John Simm heads an impressive ensemble cast as Daniel Appleton, a likeable and geeky charity researcher who stumbles on an international conspiracy involving the sale of unsuspecting Eastern European women into a nasty London prostitution ring. While scripter Abi Morgan’s multi-narrative storyline is deftly juggled by the versatile David Yates (currently busy shooting Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix), the director rightly keeps the women’s tragic situation at the heart of the harrowing drama and is well aided by a frankly startling performance from Anamaria Marinca, in her screen debut.
