The film: Nephew to Richard Roundtree's self-proclaimed sex symbol John Shaft, Sam Jackson's disillusioned cop-turned-PI expends a lot less effort pleasing the ladies. Instead, he prefers to spend his time dishing out sadistic beatings as he goes after Christian Bale's racist rich boy, a Patrick Bateman-lite who's bought his way out of a murder rap. Slick, but lacking the original's wallop.
DVD Extras:
Cast and crew interviews, Shaft: Still The Man featurette, Isaac Hayes theme music video, R Kelly Bad Man video. The interviews and featurette waste time treading on each other's toes, and it's slightly worrying how many times we're told that John Singleton's Shaft is "cool" because he viciously kicks arse throughout. Still, it `s great hearing Jackson and Singleton tell of seeing the original in the early '70s, and Isaac Hayes' gaudy video lights up the disc like a neon-drenched Christmas tree.
