It's 1590 and Will Shakespeare (Fiennes) has a spot of writer's block. His new play is going nowhere and if he doesn't find some inspiration soon his local theatre will close. Fortunately, said muse appears in the form of the lovely Lady Viola (Paltrow), leading to the usual fare of swashbuckling and romance found in all the Bard's best plays.
