Silent Hill

2

Judging from the abomination that was last year’s Doom, you’d expect cheap scares, ‘shocking’ beasties and dire dialogue from Silent Hill, a film surely destined to join said hell-on-Mars mess and Resident Evil: Apocalypse in the pile marked ‘Videogames That Should Have Remained Videogames.’ And you’d be right.

Christophe Gans’ film sets out to be a character-focused epic, as parents Sean Bean and Radha Mitchell lose their daughter in a spooky town deserted thanks to underground coal fires. The fires, of course, turn out to be Hell itself, where various nasties await. And that’s when it all starts to feel like you’re watching someone else play the game...

The 15 rating prevents true shock factor and confused plotting smothers any intended supernatural drama.
