By the time he OD-ed outside the Viper Room in 1993, River Phoenix had starred in just 15 films, the last this ghost story-cum-Western. Phoenix plays an idiot frontiersman guarding the body of his dead Indian wife. Written and directed by Sam Shepard, Silent Tongue grasps at greatness but rarely rises beyond messy. Heavy hitters Alan Bates and Richard Harris can’t unravel the muddle of Native American myth, ghosts and Old West revisionism. If he’d lived, Phoenix would have made better.
