Singin' In The Rain: 50th Anniversary Special Edition

5

Top Hollywood musicals always engage the heart before putting the vocal chords into motion, but the very best manage to put the brain into gear too. And 1952's Singin' In The Rain - - set during Hollywood's bumpy transition from silent movies to talkies - - is as good as they get. Sly, funny, sentimental and dictionary-definition feelgood, it has you itching to grab an umbrella and go frolicking in the next downpour.

DVD Extras:

Disc one kicks off with a cover-all-bases feature commentary with the surviving big names from cast and crew (as well as co-writer Adolph Green, who died last October). They're joined by Moulin Rouge helmer and Singin' fan Baz Luhrmann, and there's a nifty white-rabbit feature on top.All the real DVD meat, though, is on the second disc. There's an outtake of Debbie Reynolds' solo version of `You Are My Lucky Star', a doc about MGM's musical unit, unused audio takes of the tunes and snippets of the films that they originally appeared in.The Debbie Reynolds-hosted 50th anniversary documentary, What A Glorious Feeling, might skate over some of the bumpier bits of production (perfectionist Gene Kelly was a bastard to work with), but this is still a must-have set.
