A decade-long labour-of-love for writer-director Kerry Conran, who began working on this heroic homage to Flash Gordon, film noir, '30s screwball and monster movies in his small LA apartment on an Apple Mac II. Many millions later, the resultant film is a geeks' delight that illustrates the huge potential of bluescreen filmmaking coupled with CGI characters and backgrounds. Sky Captain is destined for endless plays on DVD, making this arguably the most perfect match of film and format so far. And if the movie lacks a certain soul, its flair cannot be faulted.
DVD Extras:
An hour-long documentary that takes you right to the beating creative heart of this groundbreaking production; the original black-and-white six-minute Sky Captain short that Conran cooked up at home; plus a so-so gag reel and two deleted scenes. All good stuff, but one feels there's a more densely packaged special edition waiting in the wings.
