While reporting on a murder trial amid strained post-war Japanese-American relations, Ethan Hawke has flashbacks to his teen romance with a Japanese girl, now the wife of the accused. Scott Hicks' Shine follow-up is laden with beautiful images, and a mighty turn from Max von Sydow as the defence lawyer... yet it's often so boring it hurts. Crap ending, too.
