Well-intentioned, earnest. What do you expect from a star’s take-me-seriously literary lumberjack drama?
Fresh from Butch Cassidy, Paul Newman filmed Ken Kesey’s doorstop about a timber-town family working through a strike. Henry Fonda plays a live-to-work dad, Newman the chip-off-his-bark son.
The familial drama is wood-dry – Newman’s butch interest clearly lies in men logging. Noble? Perhaps, but hardly gripping.
