Hollywood's remake of The Return Of Martin Guerre ultimately disappoints when compared with the French original, in which Gerard Depardieu played a peasant who assumed the identity of another man to redeem himself for past crimes. By transposing the story to post-Civil War Tennessee and smoothing out the ambiguities we get a pleasant rural romance enhanced with picture-postcard locations and period detail - but very little depth or drama. Gere is woefully miscast, his limitations highlighted by Foster's restrained performance.

Unless you're a serious Gere or Foster fan, or looking to pass an idle evening in front of the box, there is nothing to recommend this disc.
