Spaceballs

2

Sorry to shoot down your childhood memories, but Mel Brooks' johnny-come-lately Star Wars spoof really isn't as good as you may remember. John Candy in a dog suit and one barf-worthy gag at the expense of Planet Of The Apes aside, it's dumb, dated nonsense that seems more baffled by its subject matter than amused. Sit through it all and you're left with much the same queasy, pitying sensation that watching your granddad cracking jokes about the Spice Girls might inspire. God forbid that Brooks follows through on recent threats and makes a prequel-mocking follow-up.

DVD Extras:

Sparse for a "Special" Edition. Brooks' commentary is informative enough - Daphne Zuniga bagged the part of Princess Vespa after he saw her in his buddy Rob Reiner's The Sure Thing, George Lucas watched a rough cut, etc - but his comedy mugging becomes grating. The purely `comedy' chat-track is a series of bleeps and `dink' noises courtesy of Spaceballs' Jawa rip-offs, the Dinks. Bleep off.
