One of the last truly great Roman epics (and, yes, that includes Gladiator), the Kirk Douglas-starrer boasts a true cast-of-thousands battle between Spartacus' rebelling slaves and the Roman army, some quality thesp talent (Laurence Oliver, Charles Laughton, Peter Ustinov and Tony Curtis are all outstanding) and, of course, one of the most quoted lines in cinema history. Repeat after us: ""I'm Spartacus! No, I'm Spartacus...""
DVD Extras:
Trailer, production notes, cast and film-maker's biographies.A rollickingly grand film presented in an extensively restored and sharpened-within-an-inch-of-its-life format - it's five minutes longer than the original release thanks to the addition of the infamous, previously thought lost, bath-house scene. The extras are sparse (why no commentary from restorer Robert A Harris?) but this is still the best format yet on which to watch Kubrick's masterful adventure.
