An Edgar Allan Poe triple bill, by way of a Gallic makeover, Spirits Of The Dead casts a young Jane Fonda and Terence Stamp in French-speaking variations of the horror master’s tales. But there’s little here to rattle the nerves, despite Vincent Price’s stellar narration, and the spectacle of watching Fonda and Stamp wrap their tongues round another language soon wears thin. Only the third chapter, based on Poe’s Never Bet The Devil Your Head and directed by Federico Fellini, is worth a look, thanks to Stamp’s capricious performance and a truly chilling vision of the devil.
