Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams

3

If you hated Robert Rodriguez’s clunky first spies-in-short-trousers romp, don’t worry – freed from the tedious business of having to explain who the hell everyone is, the second instalment is much slicker and smarter.

Matching cartoony, primary-hued special effects to sly filmic in-jokes (vigorous nodding towards Ray Harryhausen and even a couple of Lord Of The Rings references rub shoulders with the usual 007 digs), Rodriguez sends his kiddie spook siblings (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara) off to investigate a monster-packed island. There they meet mad scientist Steve Buscemi and battle it out with two rival spy brats (one of whom is Haley Joel Osment’s sister, fact fans).

Kids will love it while grown-ups won’t be too bored – a good job as Rodriguez is already hard at work on number three.
