Sometimes you just can't escape fate - - odd-numbered Star Trek movies are doomed to mediocrity for as long as the franchise has legs. Generations is a disheartening stumble, given that it features such important events as Captain Kirk (William Shatner) shuffling off this mortal coil and the big-screen launch of the Next Generation crew (Patrick Stewart et al). Bloated with techno-babble about a "temporal nexus" and Malcolm McDowell's phoned-in villain, it's hardly a scintillating start.
DVD Extras:
A crusty commentary from writers Brannon Braga and Ron Moore is easily outperformed by the text trivia-track, an insightful, amusing trawl through hardcore Trekkie territory. The so-so docs are only notable for McDowell's attempts to look interested on set, while the best feature is easily the alternative opening, showing Kirk indulging in some planet-orbiting skydiving. Fly, fat-ass, fly!
