Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Edition

2

Oi! Wake up in the back! Infamously known as The Slow Motion Picture, Star Trek's first foray onto the big screen was a seriously mixed blessing for fans. Yes, the visuals were impressive and it was nice to see the franchise return from cancelled TV-land, but even director Robert Andromeda Strain Wise couldn't rouse this from its pretentious, turgid plotting.

DVD Extras:

Commentary with Wise, SFX guru Douglas Trumbull, composer Jerry Goldsmith and actor Stephen Collins, text commentary by technical designer Michael Okuda, retrospective documentaries, additional and deleted scenes, trailers, storyboards. Some judicious edits mean that the Director's Cut flows a lot better, but this is still an energy-sapping slog to watch. The commentaries shed light on some of the major shoot problems, while the documentaries fill in most of the info-gaps. A commendable package, then, but really only for true fans of the pic. Yes, both of you.
