Franchise saviour Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan) did it again in Trek's sixth outing, injecting fresh life into the series for William Shatner and co's last hurrah. Referencing Glasnost (the Klingons offer peace talks), Meyer further spices the brew with Kirk's personal problems and a conspiracy plot. It all works: this is a tight, thrilling send-off.
DVD Extras:
Meyer makes for a knowledgeable but not always charismatic talker on the chat track, so thank goodness for the sparkier interplay with co-writer Denny Martin Finn and a typically irreverent text commentary. A brief history lesson on the political background and Making Of featurettes complete a double-disc package, wrapped up with a tribute to Trek stalwart DeForest Kelley.
