Step Up

The creators of Save The Last Dance evidently abide by the maxim of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” – as this teen toe-tapper is a carbon copy of its predecessor. Bad boy Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) is sentenced to community service in an arts school where he catches the eye of dance star Nora (Jenna Dewan). Wouldn’t you know it, Nora needs a hoofing partner and Tyler happens to have not only talent, but also the sort of vest-bulging body certain to flutter hearts. Inevitably, the mismatched duo embark on a series of dance montages/flamboyant frottages. As the success of Dirty Dancing proved, there’s nothing teenage girls love more than sexually tame dance flicks – and Step Up certainly delivers the moves, with charismatic star Tatum managing to be both sincere and cool despite being hamstrung with a conventional, resolutely PG story arc and some stinking cheese lines. A shame there’s not more of him to ogle on the non-existent extras...
