As well as his achievements as actor and humanitarian, Sidney Poitier deserves an extra footnote in celluloid history as one of Hollywood's most successful black directors. Okay, so this zany 1980 comedy about two buffoons sent to prison for a bank job they didn't commit isn't exactly high concept. But that didn't stop it raking in $100 million. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor reprise their Silver Streak double act to raucous effect, though their indulgent and undisciplined schtick does become wearing after a while. Still, much better than their later pairings - - Another You, anyone? - - and Poitier's insistence on shooting in a real penitentiary adds some welcome edge.
