Story Of A Love Affair was the late Michelangelo Antonioni’s feature debut, but already the familiar bleak, emotionally tormented landscape is in place. The premise is ludicrously far-fetched: a rich industrialist married to a lovely younger woman becomes curious about her life before they met. So does he ask her? No, he employs a bumbling private eye to interrogate her old friends – thus rekindling the attraction between his wife and a former lover. Antonioni uses this lumpen plot to explore themes of entrapment, disillusion and despair. Lucia Bosé (a former Miss Italy) looks lovely, but she’s a glacial presence and there’s zero chemistry between her and Massimo Girotti as her lover. The remastered transfer is murky; the score is harsh and intrusive.
