Reese Witherspoon is an NY fashion designer who has everything - - money, looks and a chunky diamond on her finger, courtesy of the city's most eligible bachelor. The only thing she doesn't have is her current hubbie's signature on the divorce papers. For that, she'll have to return to Alabama and duke it out with her high-school sweetheart, played with redneck chic by Josh Lucas.

Helmer Andy Tennant's fairytale deals in southern-fried clichés and city-slicker stereotypes. It also features a spoilt bitch as its heroine. That it remains watchable is down to said bitch being played by Witherspoon. Election proved she could make a disagreeable character likeable; this shows she can make a despicable one bearable.
